Your lungs are amazing!
They help you talk to a friend, exercise, sing, laugh, cry, and more! Your lungs power your life. If you could spread them out on a surface, they would fill up approximately one side of a tennis court. Your lungs are busy at work 24/7, breathing approximately 20,000 breaths (about 9.000 liters!) a day.
Lung disease is on the rise
We're really concerned because lung diseases like Asthma, COPD and Lung Cancer are increasing worldwide. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. among men and women claiming more lives each year than colon, prostate and ovarian cancers combined. We're excited to be part of the longitudinal lung health study and are developing new kinds of tools and data to learn about, prevent and manage lung disease.
BreathResearch is collaborating with Bruce Johnson, Ph.D., at Mayo Clinic and The Wortman Lung Cancer Foundation on a multi-year study to discover how stress, exercise, sleep, diet, genetics and the environment affect the health of our lungs as we age.
There are many ways to participate in the study:
Runnings Lungs Events
Organized by the Wortman Lung Cancer Foundation, you can participate in run or walk races.
In a later phase of the study, during the running lungs events, you can be tested for lung capacity, heart rate and exercise performance.
